Clumped isotope thermometry of modern and fossil snail shells from the Himalayan-Tibetan Plateau: Implications for paleoclimate and paleoelevation reconstructions

چکیده
Abstract Carbonate clumped isotope thermometry has been applied to fossil mollusk shells from Tibet reconstruct the paleoclimate and paleoelevation of region. However, inferred climatic conditions this proxy are inconsistent with paleontological evidence. Here, we report new data both modern (5–4 Ma) freshwater results X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses Himalayan-Tibetan Plateau. Although all analyzed in study appeared pristine based on visual inspection, XRD reveal that more than half these apparently “pristine” contain trace amounts calcite. Clumped temperatures derived display a large range variation (>22 °C). Among analyzed, those containing traces calcite have yielded average ?10 °C lower no detectable same strata. These observations suggest alteration can occur aragonite low-temperature environments even visible signs only The 4 higher shells, indicating southwest was warmer 4–5 Ma today. After accounting for temperature change due global cooling, difference between suggests southwestern Tibetan Plateau Pliocene similar its present-day elevation.

متن کاملInfluence of climate change and uplift on Colorado Plateau paleotemperatures from carbonate clumped isotope thermometry
[1] The elevation history of Earth’s surface is key to understanding the geodynamic processes responsible for the rise of plateaus. We investigate the timing of Colorado Plateau uplift by estimating depositional temperatures of Tertiary lake sediments that blanket the plateau interior and adjacent lowlands using carbonate clumped isotope paleothermometry (a measure of the temperature‐dependent ...
متن کاملCarbonate oxygen isotope paleoaltimetry: evaluating the effect of diagenesis on paleoelevation estimates for the Tibetan plateau
Carbonate oxygen isotope paleoaltimetry is based on analysis of the dO value of carbonate precipitated from surface water. Deciphering the diagenetic history is important for establishing whether particular carbonates are accurate recorders of paleosurface waters, which reflect paleoelevation. This study provides examples from southern, east–central, and northeastern Tibet of approaches aimed a...
متن کاملEffects of diagenesis on paleoclimate reconstructions from modern and young fossil corals
The integrity of coral-based reconstructions of past climate variability depends on a comprehensive knowledge of the effects of post-depositional alteration on coral skeletal geochemistry. Here we combine millimeter-scale and micro-scale coral Sr/Ca data, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images, and X-ray diffraction with previously published dO records to investigate the effects of submarine...
